THE DISTRICT SIX INCIDENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM OPTIMIZES TRAFFIC CLEARANCE PROCEDURES TO KEEP OUR ROADWAYS SAFE

FACTSHEET PDF

INCIDENT MANAGEMENT IS A MULTI-AGENCY INCIDENT RESPONSE SERVICE THAT RESTORES ROADWAYS BACK TO SAFE AND FREE-FLOW CONDITIONS.

TMC operators use ITS technologies to manage incidents that impact traffic flow on our roadways. They detect, verify and assess incidents to determine severity and dispatch the appropriate resources to clear it as quickly and safely.

These resources include Road Ranger Service Patrols, Incident Response Vehicles (IRV) and the Rapid Incident Scene Clearance (RISC) team.

ROAD RANGER SERVICE PATROLS PROVIDE ASSISTANCE 24 HOURS PER DAY, 7 DAYS PER WEEK.

ROAD RANGERS

The District Six Road Ranger Program provides motorist assistance and incident management services along the state highway system in Miami-Dade County.

Road Ranger Service Patrols help stranded drivers with roadside assistance services like minor vehicle repairs and towing. They also help emergency response personnel by securing incident scenes for safe and quick clearance.

The Road Ranger Program is part of a national initiative implemented to improve the safety and mobility of our highway system. District Six is committed to providing this service in our region and provides the following services:

The following services are provided by the Road Rangers free of charge:

    • Provide maintenance-of-traffic (MOT) services during incidents
    • Assist in incident management and response
    • Tow disabled vehicles from travel lanes to nearest, safe location
    • Clear debris from travel lanes
    • Change flat tires
    • Jump-start vehicles and make minor repairs
    • Provide stranded motorists two free local calls

THE INCIDENT RESPONSE VEHICLE PROGRAM SERVES AS FDOT’S INCIDENT COMMAND POST ON OUR ROADWAYS

INCIDENT RESPONSE VEHICLE

The Incident Response Vehicle (IRV) Program operators have a law enforcement or fire rescue background and are specially trained to serve as FDOT’s point person between all emergency response agencies on the field.

IRV responds to traffic events along 95 Express and Interstate 95. Their services will be expanded to additional managed lanes projects within District Six. Program vehicles carry specialized equipment such as spill absorbent materials, roadway repair supplies, flares, signs and traffic cones.

THE RAPID INCIDENT SCENE CLEARANCE (RISC) PROGRAM IS EXPEDITING THE REMOVAL OF LARGE VEHICLE CRASHES THAT AFFECT THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY.

RAPID INCIDENT SCENE CLEARANCE

The Rapid Incident Scene Clearance (RISC) service is a performance based program that incentivizes quick clearance times for heavy-duty vehicle crashes with spilled loads. RISC events must meet program requirements and are available along District Six highways and select arterial roadways in Miami-Dade county.

Operations staff at the SunGuide® TMC coordinate with Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and activate the program to restore highway capacity in shorter time frames than with regular private towing and recovery services.
